The fit of these headphones is deliciously soft and comfortable. I’m not sure many people would want an XLR cable and Focal might be better off substituting it with a 3m cable terminated with a 3.5/6.35mm jack plug rather than making customers pay $145 for the cable they really need. Focal also supplies a 3m balanced cable that’s terminated with a 4-pin XLR stereo plug which fits Focal’s headphone amp. The cable is designed with smartphones and digital audio players in mind. The Clear Mg are supplied with two sets of cables one is 1.2m long and terminated with a 3.5mm stereo jack plug and a 6.35mm adapter for listening with full-sized audio systems. The cables bifurcate in a Y-shape towards the top and each of the two wires ends plug into the earcups using a mono 3.5mm jack plug. The cables supplied with Focal Clear Mg are beautifully made with a light tan rubberized coating and exquisite terminations. It’s a nice touch, if true.Įven the hard carry case for the Focal Clear Mg has a luxury feel. I can’t help thinking that Focal chose the hexagon or honeycomb shape to mimic the geographical outline of France which Some French people refer to as L’Hex. The outer surface of the earcups have grilles that are perforated with hexagonal-shaped apertures to enable even more sound and pressure waves to escape. The Clear Mg are rated at 55Ω impedance and are easy to drive, even with a smartphone, if you must.

Focal has also protected the magnesium drivers with special ‘M’-shaped grilles that precisely mirror the contours of the drivers to reproduce higher frequencies with more clarity. That’s a much wider range than the standard frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz that most headphones cover. They can deliver an extended frequency response that goes all the way from the low rumble of 5Hz, all the way up to something akin to a bat squeak at 28kHz. The drivers in each earcup are Focal’s classic 40mm ‘M’-shaped dome and made from magnesium. Each earcup is fitted with a luxuriously soft earpad that’s covered in a perforated microfibre material that can wick away any moisture and provides an extended soundstage thanks to their extra depth. Those memory foam earcups aren’t just for comfort and isolation, as Focal have deployed certain materials as acoustic treatment, which further enhances the level of clarity and detail that these headphones provide, leaving you with no unwanted frequencies bouncing around, getting in the way. Being a closed-back design means you’re not going to get the most expansive soundstage that an open-backed design can provide, but next to its closest rivals, the Listen Pros are honest, direct and the soundstage is very pleasing.
